The Substance Film
The filmmaker's unflinching satire examines the demanding standards for feminine aesthetics and the dreaded aspects of ageing. The veteran actress delivers a masterful performance as Elisabeth, a mature celebrity forced into starring in a fitness program on television. The Woman in Cabin 10 Film
This Agatha Christie-esque story features Knightley in the role of Laura, a skilled journalist who opts for some time off from reporting on global conflict to board a luxury cruise with a gravely sick wealthy inheritor and donor, her husband, and other extremely wealthy guests. Yet once a mysterious woman goes overboard during the evening and everyone claims she was never there, Laura's investigative instincts awaken. Out now, on Netflix
Presence
The acclaimed director pushes his creative boundaries through this clever paranormal narrative captured wholly from the perspective of the phantom. As a family including mother Rebekah plus Callina Liang as Chloe settles into their fresh home, the lens – AKA the Presence – tracks their movements. The teen shows signs of conscious of the ghostly being, and it seems guarding her. But why? It's a fun idea that remains concise, including a revelation you might not see coming. October 11th, 4.35pm, 10.10pm, the Sky channel
The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent
The iconic actor embraces his unique fame via this meta comedy caper. He acts as a self-obsessed celebrity playing himself who agrees to a lucrative offer to appear at a festive event on the Spanish island for billionaire superfan Javi. Recruited by the intelligence agency to spy on the suspected cartel boss, Cage's “nouveau shamanic acting ability” is put to the test. Saturday 11 October, 9pm, Channel 4
This Creepy Thriller
Derrickson's claustrophobic thriller holds up well despite the lack of a sequel. Located in the late 70s in Denver, multiple disappearances has rendered the children frightened. When Finney is kidnapped by “the Grabber” and locked up in a basement, he dreads the worst. Yet the non-functional line mounted nearby continues to ring, with ghostly voices providing assistance, and the intuitive nightmares of Gwen, his sister might rescue him. A genuinely scary movie. This Saturday, 10.50pm, Film4
This Dramatic Portrait
In the conflict between faith and wealth, the winner is obvious for Mammon in this director's brilliantly over-the-top film adaptation of the disgraced religious broadcaster and her criminal husband. Garfield acts as the venal Jim, who states at the beginning, claiming divine approval for wealth. He and Tammy Faye begin monetising the American public's Christian beliefs. It's a riot of poor styling, overdone appearance and hypocrisy, yet Jessica Chastain succeeds to present the character as a sympathetic figure. Tuesday 14 October, late night, Film4
