Individuals Stopping Slimming Medications Gain Back Weight Four Times Faster Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

A recent study reveals that patients who discontinue popular slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional lifestyle plans.

Research printed in a major health publication shows that while overweight individuals can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Users buying these medications need to be aware of the risk of fast weight regain when the medication concludes," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain means a reversion to original weight in about 18 months.

Weighing Approaches

The analysis, which reviewed dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

Researchers point out that people who lose weight through diet and exercise generally see a less rapid creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Quick Rebound

Experts believe the mode of action of the injections explains the heightened regain.

These medications imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal may cause the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could diminish responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement means hunger is unsuppressed, making binge eating much more probable."

A Chronic Condition?

The NHS recommend the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts say that, given the significant potential of relapse, the treatment is often long-term.

This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "highlight the chronic nature of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.

User Accounts

Users who have come off the jabs report a powerful resurgence of cravings.

"It was like a switch flipping and you're instantly ravenous," recalled a patient.

This difficulty is worsened if individuals have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Significant Adoption

Figures suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is more common among women compared to males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, clinicians emphasize that while the jabs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and lasting health benefits likely depends on combined behavioural changes.
